TITLE: High School Assistant Principal

FUNCTION:

To promote the educational development, academic success and well being of each student through the application of leadership, supervisory, and management skills.

REPORTS TO: Principal

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master's degree with emphasis in curriculum, leadership and administration.
  2. RI certification as a middle/secondary school administrator.
  3. At least five (5) years of successful teaching in public schools.
  4. Experience in public school administration.
  5. Knowledge of high school philosophy and practice.
  6. Training and demonstrated skill in evaluation and assessment of teacher performance and knowledge of clinical supervision.
  7. Understanding/experience of human relations, communications, leadership, budgeting, and organizational theory.
  8. Understanding/experience with or knowledge of site-based management.
  9. Understanding/experience and knowledge of the New England Schools and Colleges (NEASC) accreditation process.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge of the Rhode Island Graduation Diploma System
  11. Demonstrated skill in promoting sensitivity awareness and cultural diversity.


RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

The Assistant Principal will as directed by the building principal assist in:

  1. Curriculum development.
  2. The coordination of student activities and athletics consistent with the educational goals of the Cranston Public Schools and school population served.
  3. Promoting the establishment of a productive environment for all district staff and students in order to promote self-actualization, achievement, teamwork, affiliation, and a humanistic, encouraging interactive climate for learning.
  4. Working with the appropriate committees to recruit, screen, recommend for hire, orient, train, and assign the school's certified and non-certified staff.
  5. Directing activities of the school's professional staff in the performance of their duties to ensure a high quality high school program.
  6. Developing and implementing appropriate Professional Development activities for all staff.
  7. Appraising, evaluating, and counseling the school's certified and non-certified staff to translate the school's educational philosophy, goals, and objectives into action terms that directly benefit the student.
  8. Participating in the scheduling and evaluation of itinerant personnel assigned to the school to support the total program.
  9. Planning and supervising safety emergency procedures for the school to ensure the well-being of students and faculty.
  10. Preparing and submitting the school's budgetary requests and monitors expenditures of funds in order to maintain control, and account for local funds and student activity funds and to promote the educational goals of the school.
  11. Prepares such reports as may be required to keep the Principal informed of all school activities and problems.
  12. Participating in the supervision and improvement of the physical plant in order to provide an environment conducive to learning, including, but not limited to custodial maintenance, building use, security, and food service operations.
  13. Promoting effective communication between the school and community to create positive support, understanding, and participation for continued school improvement.
  14. Promoting opportunities for self-actualization by creating a climate in which staff is encouraged to gain enjoyment from their work, develop their potential, and take on new and interesting activities.
  15. Serving as a member of district committees to facilitate communication and collegial relationships.
  16. Coordinating instructional programs, curriculum work, and the master budget development processes.
  17. Assist in the preparation and coordination of the master student schedule.
  18. Providing leadership for the development and organization of curriculum.
  19. Assuming responsibility for the school's responses to Federal, State, School Committee, and Central Office policies and regulations.
  20. Developing and coordinating a system to maintain appropriate student conduct throughout the building to provide an orderly environment conducive to learning as well as handles and upholds the district's disciplinary policy and procedures.
  21. Most importantly, remain current regarding changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field to ensure quality leadership as well as to prepare for possible administrative advancement.
  22. Performing additional special assignments at the direction of the Principal, consistent with III.D Duties of Administrators and III.E Additional Responsibilities of Administrators provisions of this Administrator's contract.


EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Rhode Island Department of Education Model Evaluation & Support System for Building Administrators.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Twelve-month work year. Salary and benefits per contract.
