Founding High School Dean of Curriculum & Instruction (2026-2027)

Excel Academy is a network of five schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island that prepares students in grades 5-12 to succeed in high school, enroll in college, and engage productively in their communities. The majority of our 1,700 students identify as Latinx or Hispanic and will be the first in their families to graduate from college. About the Role

The Dean of Curriculum and Instruction (DCI) will drive the curricular and instructional efficacy of the school. The DCI will manage instructional staff by providing regular feedback to teachers on their effectiveness and support them to meet instructional goals. They will design and deliver professional development to strengthen the instructional program.

Responsibilities

  • Drive excellent teaching practices: observe classes, give written and verbal feedback, and support teachers in instructional and curricular planning.
  • Ensure regular presence in classrooms and bi‑weekly meetings with direct reports, providing structured agendas.
  • Lead curriculum development and ensure alignment with Rhode Island Curriculum Frameworks.
  • Use assessment data to guide teacher improvement, develop and implement high‑quality assessments, and manage student standardized testing.
  • Support equity and inclusion: collaborate on interventions, monitor special education and ELL programs, and ensure inclusive instructional practices.
  • Create a positive student culture of academic achievement, guiding teachers to embed community values and behavior‑management systems.
  • Develop professional culture: lead staff professional development, hire and retain talented teachers, write evaluations, and promote career growth.
  • Support the Head of School in school leadership, articulating vision, performing health assessments, and overseeing budgets.
  • Collaborate with the Excel community: participate in staff norms, substitute teaching, conferences, and network‑wide instructional leadership.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree (master's preferred).
  • Minimum five years of teaching experience; experience in high‑performing, urban public charter or district schools preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to raise academic achievement for historically under‑served students.
  • Strong commitment to rigorous classroom instruction and culture.
  • Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, or other common student languages an asset.
